چکیده

Since the invention of the electrodynamic loudspeakec there has been a need for greater acoustical output, especially at low frequencies. For modern-day applications it is desirable to reduce the volume of the loudspeaker (and cabinet). These two demana5 are physically contradictory. It is the aim of this paper to offer options to evoke the illusion of a higher bass response, while the power radiated by the loudspeaker at those low frequencies remains the same or is even lower: This is feasible by exploiting certain psychoacoustic phenomena. The required non-linear signal processing is studied for a number of specific implementations in continuous and discrete time.

The glissando illusion and handedness.

This article reports the first study of the glissando illusion, which was created and published as a sound demonstration by Deutsch [Deutsch, D. (1995). Musical illusions and paradoxes. La Jolla: Philomel Records (compact disc)]. To experience the illusion, each subject was seated in front of two stereophonically separated loudspeakers, with one to his left and the other to his right. A sound p...

Reproducing Low-Pitched Signals through Small Loudspeakers*

In many sound reproduction applications it is not possible to use large loudspeakers because of size or cost constraints. Typical applications are portable audio, multimedia, TV, and public address systems, to name just a few. Hence the devices are often small in size, and therefore the transducers are inherently small as well. Needless to say, the competitive market just mentioned also dictate...

Sound frequency affects speech emotion perception: results from congenital amusia

Congenital amusics, or "tone-deaf" individuals, show difficulty in perceiving and producing small pitch differences. While amusia has marked effects on music perception, its impact on speech perception is less clear. Here we test the hypothesis that individual differences in pitch perception affect judgment of emotion in speech, by applying low-pass filters to spoken statements of emotional spe...

Perceiving Anger and Joy in Speech through the Size Code

Human speech conveys emotions not only by words, but also by nonverbal acoustic cues. The hypothesis was tested that anger and joy can be conveyed in speech by displaying effort to sound larger or smaller, just as expressing dominance and submission in animal communication. Human listeners perceived vowels synthesized with a statically lengthened vocal tract and lowered pitch as from a large pe...

Investigations on control and perception of virtual distance using loudspeakers

The proposed system enables the control of sound sources in a large auditorium both in direction and distance. Reproduction of 3D sound fields over loudspeakers whereas distance coding is taken into account is a rather difficult goal. Because different simple and complex properties of a sound event contribute to the perception of distance. Similar to the perception of pitch, the perception of d...
